High level media symposium and lecture on local governance

The Orderly Society Trust in collaboration with the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) organised a high level media symposium for Newspaper Editors, Publishers and other media executives. The essence of the symposium was to engage the media executives and emphasise the very important role the media plays driving social change through critical reporting and investigative journalism.

The participants discussed innovative ideas and strategies that can be employed by the media to better scrutinize local government’s activities and focus the country’s attention to issues such as accountability, transparency, civic participation and delivery of basic services and infrastructure to local communities.

The Orderly Society Trust also in collaboration with the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism organised a lecture themed ‘making local governance work for the poor’. The essence was organised to help increase discourse on local governance in Nigeria. The participants at the event included members of the media and local government officials. Issues discussed at the forum included the inadequate funding of local governments and its adverse effect on service delivery, lack of transparency and accountability at the local level as well as the how civic participation can help make local governance more effective in Nigeria.
