Literacy Improvement Programme
Illiteracy is a serious disease that eats deep into a society’s fabric. Its effect is devastating to the socio- economic life of any society. The statistics show that the country is backwards in terms of providing basic literacy and numeracy for the teeming population, not only for the children but amazingly the adult group. This is why OST launched its literacy improvement programme in 2011.
The programme is designed to encourage functional literacy through educational programmes not only in the formal sector but also through adult based or non- formal education. Trust (OST) is adopting a four dimensional approach for the programme. This includes: reading and writing classes for primary school students; Mathematics and English classes for secondary school students; literacy classes for adults and the Skills and Proficiency Programme (SAPP) for young graduates.
Objectives
- To teach adults who never had the opportunity of formal education to read and write through the adult literacy classes.
- To complement the English and mathematics classes that secondary school students receive in order to better prepare them for their final school leaving certificate examinations.
- To help improve the reading and writing skills of primary school students.
- To help prepare young graduates for the outside world by equipping them with the necessary skills to survive either as an entrepreneur or in the job market.
There are presently four centres for the adult education classes. Ikoyi, Onigbongbo, Ojodu and Oshodi, all in Lagos State. The classes are free and are open to the public .The adult learners are all provided with text books and all other educational materials at no cost to them.
There are also 2 English and Mathematics teaching centres in Ikoyi and Onigbongbo for for secondary school students. OST is presently working on introducing reading and writing classes into the curriculum for public primary schools in Lagos State.
